Erased hard drive and downloaded special copy of software directly from US server and took home with me an hour later.įeb 2020 - Still having same ongoing problems so took back to local Apple Store. Sept 2019 - Still same ongoing problems so took to local Apple StoreĪdvised I had a corrupted copy of Mojave on my iMac. RMA to Crucial to replace 2 x 8GB sticks and bought another 2 x 8Gb sticks so increased memory to 32Gb, removing original Apple memory. They advised it was due to faulty additional third memory (Crucial) so I advised to replace with new memory. July 2019 - Took to Premium Reseller / Repairer After having a new logic board replaced 6 weeks ago I hope I don't need another new one.įor approx 12 months, I have noticed speed issues, slow SSDs, problems with USB ports. They have advised I need to get a new hard drive and back up all my files I can using recovery software, clean install Catalina and reformat my two external SSDs still as APFS and try for three days min just connected directly to the back of iMac without Spotlight on and minimal apps to see if fault still continues. Trim - I thought that was auto enabled in Catalina, but now I am unsure.Īfter the third new SSD has unmounted in 10 days, I feel uneasy about connecting anything to my Mac now. Whether they are connected to a new USB 3 powered hub or directly to the back of my iMac (as Apple have just asked me to do). I can see my internal hard drive when my iMac boots up and I can also see my two external SSDs in Disk Utility but both are greyed out. The SSD I was using to back up files recovered by Data Rescue 5 on another SSD has also unmounted and unable to access. Sorry for delay, I have been talking to AppleCare team when you replied. The question is whether this is a software issue? Is it a faulty SSD or logic board? Is there a firmware update for the SSD like the one Apple uses for the 2017 MackBook Pro 13"? I am attaching the first kernel panic (4/6/21) after I was able to get the unit running again and the kernel panic from last night (4/21/21). They now occur overnight during which no programs were open. After that the frequency of the kernel panics seemed to be random. I upgraded the OS from Catalina to Big Sur. The system seemed to settle down after resetting NVRAM and SMC. After countless attempts I was successful! Persistence paid off! I was able to save the kernel panic report but the system was very unstable. Now that my local Apple stores are open I decided to try to boot up again to see if I could get to the disk utility screen. I declined and decided to wait until local retail stores were open again. Essentially they told me they would need to send the unit to Apple for repair. I did bring it in to a repair center and they had the same problem. I called Apple Support and they said that I would need to bring the unit to a third party repair service since all Apple retail centers were closed due to COVID. I kept on getting back to the flashing folder. I used the Command and R key combination to bring up Disk Utility or restore options. It would seem it was an issue with not finding the boot drive. It started a year ago when my MacBook crashed and would reboot to a flashing folder with a question mark in the middle.
